Blades Academy Players Applaud Actors

Among the audience at the Sheffield Theatres football themed production of ‘There’s Only One Wayne Matthews’ were members of Sheffield United’s Academy.

Jordan Slew, Troy Pennycooke-Morgan, Corey Gregory and Ishmael Lammy were giving out prizes at a presentation evening and were able to enjoy the play as part of the event.

Jordan commented;

“We really enjoyed the performance and found it really interesting. The actors really engaged the audience.”

More than 200 parents, children, staff and teachers linked to Sheffield United projects enjoyed the performance of ‘There’s Only One Wayne Matthews’ at the Club’s Platinum Suite at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United staged the performance of the play for those involved in the Club’s community programmes – Playing for Success and Double Club. Actors Troy Glasgow and Issac Ssebadeke (pictured below with SUFC Academy players) reenacted the play and took part in a question and answer session within the setting of the stadium.

Troy Glasgow said:

“Performing the play at Bramall Lane has been a perfect way to round off our schools tour and good preparation for the Crucible. I want to thank the amazing audiences we have had who have been very diverse and the kids for the great questions they have asked.”

There’s Only One Wayne Matthews tells the story of a young boy battling the odds and the bullies to master the beautiful game. Roy Williams’ vibrant play explores friendship, forgiveness and finding out what you’re good at.

Sue Beeley, Head of Community for the United Initiative, added:

“We are always looking at doing something different. It seemed very appropriate to use SUFC as a venue for this play and the subject matter is relevant for our very diverse local community.”

“Everyone was very appreciative of an extremely good show and complimentary about the productions creative way of tackling a difficult subject. We hope to work with Sheffield Theatres again in the future.”
