Chesterfield youngster Craig Clay hit a 92nd minute equaliser as the Spireites came from 4-1 down to draw a ten goal shoot-out against Crewe Alexandra.
Having conceded four in a poor first-half display Chesterfield mounted a spirited second half display but trailed 5-3 with two minutes left on the clock.
Step forward Clay, with the former Youth team captain first winning a 89th minute penalty that was converted by Danny Whitaker before unleashing a 25 yard effort in the third minute of stoppage time to level the game.
Saturday’s League Two game could not have started better for Crewe with Alex storming into a 3-0 lead within the opening 13 minutes and boss Dario Gradi was left to rue a missed opportunity, he said:
“My worry is that we are capable of shooting ourselves in the foot and we did that by giving two penalties away. We should’ve won but we aren’t good enough yet to make sure we win these kind of games.”
Chesterfield boss John Sheridan was relieved after seeing his side do enough to stay second, he said:
“You can look at it in both ways. 4-1 down in the first half and in the second half we should have gone on to win the game. The goals that we have conceded today have been very poor.”
“We’ll look at the goals and I’ll show the players but to come back 4-1 down, you’ll never do that in your career so credit to them.”
