Clarets Snap Up New Zealand Starlet

Burnley Football Club have offered a two-year Apprenticeship to New Zealand international Cameron Howieson.

Howieson is an attacking midfielder who showcased himself during the under-17 World Cup finals in Mexico this summer.

The 16-year old joins the Clarets from a New Zealand-based club and despite his roots downunder qualifies for a British passport through his Scottish father.

Director of Youth Martin Dobson was made aware of Howieson after a former Turf Moor favourite Ian Brennan passed on a recommendation.

This resulted in a proposed trial in which the youngster impressed enough to be offered a deal at the back end of last term.

“We are always looking and if there is a recommendation we will pursue it,” said Dobson.

“We are trying to get talented young players in. Obviously the North West is a very competitive area and we are prepared to spread the net wide.”

He added: “Cameron came in at the end of last season and had a couple of training sessions with the youth team.”

“We liked the look of him and wanted to take it further so offered him a scholarship.”

“It’s a big decision for him and his family but he wants to play in English football.”

Howieson is the youth team’s fourth addition for this coming campaign and will be ready for action once he has received international clearance.
