Baker Keen To Keep Young Stars During Transfer Window

Crewe Alexandra’s Assistant Manager Neil Baker is confident that the club can keep hold of their young stars during the January transfer window.

Alex have gained a reputation down the years for developing young players and selling them on to club’s in higher divisions.

The likes of James Bailey (Derby County) and Nicky Maynard (Bristol City) are two players to have left Gresty Road to flourish in the Championship.

England youth international’s Max Clayton and Nick Powell have both been linked with moves away from Cheshire this season while Ashley Westwood has also impressed for the Railwaymen.

Powell bagged a brace in the 5-2 New Year’s Eve win over Bristol Rovers to increase speculation about his future but Baker claims interest has also been shown in striker Shaun Miller.

He said: “We’ve always had to sell to move on but I’ll stick my neck out on this one – I’ll be surprised if we lose anybody in this window.”

“Nick is the obvious one, Shaun hasn’t had a great run of late but his early-season form attracted interest. We’ve also got decent midfield players at the club.”

“They’re not all Premier League clubs looking at our players, there’s teams from other leagues so that leaves us vulnerable all through the squad.”

“But, as I say, I’m quite happy for January to pass with the same group of players that we had, with maybe one or two additions.”
