Wrexham Promotion Push Powered by Home-Grown Stars

When Wrexham took on Kidderminster Harriers last Saturday eight players in their match-day squad had come through the club’s youth system.

First year apprentices Robbie Evans, who started and completed the game, and Bradley Reid who entered the fray after 10 minutes have both already been awarded professional terms for next season while the other six were Chris Maxwell, Declan Walker, Leon Clowes, Johnny Hunt, James Colbeck and Nick Rushton.

“I’m pleased for the young lads. Of the staring 11, six are from our Centre of Excellence, which is a great sign for the club. Them coming through bodes well for the future and they equipped themselves very well” said Manager Andy Morrell.

While the Reds first XI were defeated 2-1 in the Blue Square Premier, a result that leaves them certain to face an end of season play-off lottery to regain their Football League status, the Under 18 side were crowned the North West Youth Alliance League Champions for 2012-13, the 2nd time in the last four seasons.

A presentation at the Racecourse saw the youngsters celebrate in front of a 4,000 home crowd after taking the title last Wednesday when a series of results gave them an unassailable lead at the top of the table without them even kicking a ball.

Since the club’s relegation from the Football League in 2008, Wrexham has continued to run a successful youth programme from U7 through to U18 thanks to the full support of the WST Fans owned club and continued assistance of LFE.
