Dunne Talks Up Colchester’s Teenage Stars

Colchester United’s boss Joe Dunne has used pre-season to take a closer look at the club’s youth players.

Dunne who headed up the U’s Youth department for several years knows the importance of developing home-grown talent more acutely than most and is eager to give youth a chance.

Michael O’Donoghue who signed professional terms over the summer and the likes of Frankie Kent have already been involved in first-team matches during the pre-season period.

Sammie Szmodics, Macauley Bonne and Jack Curtis have also had run-outs as the U’s build for their League One opener at Gillingham on Saturday 3rd August.

“We’re trying to encourage them to focus on movement, skill and tempo as we do with our Pro’s,” said Dunne.

“This is a guideline to encourage our young players to break through.

These lads are the future of our club so it’s been important to support and nurture them when they’ve been involved with the first-team.”
