To celebrate UK Parliament week back in November, BTEC students at Carlisle United Community Trust took part in a parliamentary workshop delivered by Rachael Dodgson – UK Parliament Senior Education & Engagement Officer.
The session which was held at Brunton Park, was organised to educate the students on all things UK Parliament, from how it functions, the roles and responsibilities of MPs and members of the House of Lords, as well as how they can get their voices heard.
Carlisle MP John Stevenson also attended the session and took part in Q&A sessions with the students which covered topics such as…
- How and why we vote
- Bills, laws and petitions
- Local issues in our area
Education Officer at Carlisle United, Liam Jackson said: “It was great to see the learners engage with Rachael and John in such a positive manner, discussing key topics that they feel are important in the local area. They all came away with a better understanding of how parliament works and the positive contributions they can have through debate and discussions.”
Carlisle MP, John Stevenson added: “It was great to meet the students and answer questions and discuss current issues with them. They were all enthusiastic and interested and were a credit to their class as they participated in UK Parliament Week.”
