Tranmere Rovers winger Joe Thompson has been given the all-clear following his battle with cancer.

The 25-year-old, has undergone a six-month course of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma last October.

However earlier today he announced on Twitter that he was in “complete remission” and has set his sights on a return to first-team football.

The former Rochdale midfielder, who was the League Two Apprentice of the Year in 2007 has been inundated with well wishes since he broke the news.

His message was immediately retweeted and added as a favourite by hundreds of users of the social network site, including Swansea City midfielder Wayne Routledge.

Danny Holmes was one of the first of his team mates to congratulate him, writing “absolutely buzzing for you mate. Can’t wait to see you back on that pitch!!!!”.

Thompson has also raised more than £16,000 for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research as part of the Grow 4 Joe campaign. Team-mates and players from other clubs pledged their support by growing their hair in the closing weeks of last season.
