History was made at the County Ground last night as Swindon Town U18s dumped eleven time winners Manchester United out of the FA Youth Cup, beating the young Red Devils 2-0.
It was a feat that seemed near on impossible prior to the match, with United’s U18s going into the clash having won all eleven of their U18 Premier League North fixtures so far this season, sitting nine points clear at the top of the league table.
However, thanks to two first half goals from young Swindon striker Botan Ameen, the 2,187 supporters in attendance at the County Ground were treated to an FA Youth Cup giant killing to remember.
Speaking after his brace vs United, Ameen said: “It’s brilliant. This is the stuff I’ve been dreaming about since seven or eight years old, playing in this stadium in front of fans, it’s brilliant and I couldn’t wish for anything more.”
U18s Manager, Sean Wood, added: “Lost for words still a little bit. When we got the boys together on the pitch at the end, I was looking at their faces and they were all absolutely exhausted, they put in absolutely everything that they possibly could to get that result today. I’m obviously really pleased and proud for everybody, and that’s for everyone, past and present, that’s worked with those players. And obviously massively proud of the players for putting in a performance like that. As a club, we should all be proud.”
Swindon Town will now face either Gillingham U18s or Sunderland U18s in the next round.
