Bird Signs Extension With Barnsley

Barnsley midfielder Jared Bird has agreed a second professional contract to extend his stay at the club for another year.

The 19-year-old joined The Tykes from Derby County after he was released at the end of his apprenticeship last summer.

“Jared led by example throughout last season and did everything we asked of him on and off the pitch,” Barnsley Under-23 head coach Paul Harsley told the club website.

“He has been rewarded for that with a new deal and I couldn’t be more pleased for him. All the coaches at the club will continue to work with him and hope his progression continues.”

Bird has made a huge impact at Oakwell since his arrival, captaining the Under-23 side and earning a regular spot on the first-team bench, although he is yet to achieve a senior bow.

He said: “I’m delighted to extend my stay here at Oakwell. I felt I did well last season and I got enormous pride from leading the 23s. I aim to push on this season and try to force my way into Paul Heckingbottom’s thinking.”
