Stav Signs Up

Alex Stavrinou

Promising midfielder and ASE graduate Alex Stavrinou has put pen to paper on a professional contract with Charlton Athletic.

The 18 year old, along with defender Jack Clark, was told back in February that he would graduate from Charlton’s Academy to be offered professional terms with the Club ahead of the 2009-10 season.

The highly-rated Cyprus youth international was converted from a centre-back to a central midfielder by Under 16s coach Steve Avory.

He has since gone on to flourish in that role, making a total of 22 appearances for the U18’s last season and played 12 times for the Club’s Reserve team.

The East Ham-based starlet, who qualifies for Cyprus though his father, could now be set to feature in Manager Phil Parkinson’s first-team squad next season as Charlton attempt to earn an immediate return to the Championship.

After informing Stavrinou he would be offered terms with the club, Addicks boss Phil Parkinson said at the time:

“Stav has been a credit to himself and the way he has conducted himself in his hunger and desire to be a player. He deserved a contract.”

Like the rest of Charlton’s squad, Stavrinou returned for the first day of pre-season training last week as the Addicks turn their attentions to the opening game of the season against Wycombe Wanderers at The Valley on Saturday 8th August.
