Young Lions Slip To Defeat

England’s U20’s slipped to a second group defeat in the U20’s World Cup last night to Ghana.

The result, leaves the young lions, who fell to an opening group game defeat to Uruguay (0-1) clinging to an outside chance of progression to the second round if they can overcome Uzbekistan in their final group match.

Going into last night’s encounter the England camp had been beset with problems with several members the squad afflicted by sickness, however England U20s Head Coach Brian Eastwick had no complaints at the scoreline his team suffered against Ghana on Tuesday night, even tipping the Africans as potential Finalists in the competition.

Speaking after the match, Eastwick admitted that the Young Lions had lost to the better side on the night:

“While 4-0 may have been a little bit harsh, we certainly deserved to be beaten”

“We were outplayed in every department: physically, technically and tactically – and I have absolutely no complaints about being beaten by a better side.”

“We did have a few problems leading up to the game, which you can’t predict, with players waking up this morning being quite ill with severe sickness and diarrhoea but that’s not an excuse.”

“I think Ghana certainly have the potential to go to the Final.”

England now face Uzbekistan in Suez on Friday evening and in a match that could still give them an entry route to the next round with Eastwick keen to make amends.

“We need to score against Uzbekistan and beat them, I think that game may be a much more even contest and if we can win, we may have an outside chance of getting to the next round.”

He added.
