Watford 1 – 2 MK Dons

Watford’s U18’s went down to two late goals on Saturday as they were defeated on home soil by a determined MK Dons side.

The Don’s turned the tables on their hosts after suffering an early season to Watford in the reverse fixture.

The visitors went close early on with Justin Dowling and Charlie Collins both threatening Jonathan Bond’s goal but the home side progressively gained a foothold in the game and opened the scoring three minutes before half-time.

Sean Murray and Matthew Whichelow combined, and when Whichelow pulled the ball back to Murray the youngster found the back of the net from close range.

Murray went close to doubling the lead shortly after the interval but he saw his goal bound header cleared off the line after a Jack Warburton corner.

Almost like the flick of a switch, the near miss sparked the Don’s into life.

First Collins forced Bond into a save after an angled drive and then Adam Chicksen missed a fantastic chance to equaliser when his header sailed over the bar from close range.

As Watford toiled to regain any initiative the Don’s continued to press but could not force a goal to bring them back on to level terms.

But with five minutes left of the 90, the Don’s found an equaliser in the most unlikely fashion. A Chicksen corner was misjudged by Bond and the ball deflected off a home defender into the unguarded goal.

The Don’s however were not prepared to settle to a draw, sensing that Watford were now on the rails they pressed for the killer blow and it duly came courtesy of substitute George Baldock.

A Collins free-kick could only be parried by Bond and Baldock lashed home to complete an amazing turnaround and give the Don’s all three points.
