LFE is saddened to learn of the passing of Sunderland coach Carlton Fairweather, aged 63.
Carlton had played a significant role in the development of Sunderland’s academy and the experience provided to young players, over a long and successful period of 22 years.
He enjoyed a playing career featuring for Wimbledon and Carlisle United, before transitioning into the world of coaching. Carlton initially spent time in the academy programme at the Dons leading the youth team and reserves, followed by a spell at Crystal Palace.
Carlton’s affinity with the Black Cats began in 2003, where he first joined the community programme and then led Sunderland Women for three seasons before positively impacting on the academy for many years. He was a beloved character at the Academy of Light and had always been supportive of LFE and the wider youth development programme.
Sunderland’s Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman said: “Carlton’s personality and charisma was unique. He worked across all aspects of our Club and the reason he’s so highly thought of is down to his dedication, humility, and work ethic. Within a sporting environment, you need consistency, and Carlton’s character very rarely shifted from enthusiastic, bubbly, and infectious. Add this to someone who crafted their skill of coaching and mentoring over so many years and it’s a special mix. I was blessed to spend time with Carlton on many occasions and he always brought the gift of wisdom, a gift only very few people can give. He will be truly missed by all within our Club.”
LFE’s North East Regional Officer, Peter Hood added: “He really will be missed. I certainly enjoyed many memories, in opposite dug outs but certainly since joining LFE, chats around young people, values and challenges in football and the importance of having good support and people around you.”
The thoughts of everyone at LFE are with Carlton’s family and friends.
