Former LFE apprentice Ben Godfrey made his UEFA Champions League debut last night in Atalanta’s 0-3 away win at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Godfrey, who was part of the 2014-2016 LFE apprenticeship cohort whilst at York City, joined the 2023/24 Europa League champions in the summer from Premier League side Everton.
The versatile defender has enjoyed an impressive rise since graduating through York’s academy, playing in all three divisions in the EFL before his move to Everton in 2020.
He spent four seasons at Goodison Park before securing a move to Atalanta in June for a fee in the region of £10m.
The 26-year-old made his maiden Serie A outing in August vs Lecce, and last night appeared in Europe’s top competition for the first time in his career, coming on as a substitute in the 83rd minute at the VELTINS-Arena.
After the game, Godfrey posted on his Twitter account: “Champions League debut! Big performance from the boys tonight… +3.”
