Former Ipswich Town star Matt Holland has lavished praise on current Town youngster Connor Wickham and labelled him as a “frightening” prospect.
Wickham’s progress has been surrounded by a fanfare of press since making his debut for the Tractor Boys when still a 16 year old schoolboy, however Holland believes that the youngster merits the plaudits especially after seeing him score “an outstanding goal” against Sheffield United last Saturday.
“Running from his own half with power, pace and skill, he belied his age with his confidence and a finish of the utmost composure too,” said Holland. “He may be 17 but he has the body of a 25-year-old.”
“I don’t like to build youngsters up too much but it’s frightening to think how good Connor Wickham could become once he matures as a player.”
“Some people have questioned Wickham’s ability to score goals but he hasn’t played that often this season and when he has, he’s put in a terrific shift on one of the flanks more often than not.”
“He’ll be a top striker for many years to come but he will do well to better the goal he scored against Sheffield United. It was pure magic,” he added.
