Huddersfield’s New Training Base “Vital” For Academy

Huddersfield Town’s plans for a new Canalside Club training base have received Football League backing.

Town’s plans include housing the Club’s Academy on the new £5m complex at Syngenta on Leeds Road.

Academy Manager Graham Mitchell says Canalside would be “vital” for the continued development of the Club’s youth set-up.

And his view is shared by The Football League’s North West Youth Development Officer Harry Wilson.

“Acquiring a new, modern training complex is extremely important for the future of the Huddersfield Town Academy,” said Wilson.

“The development of Syngenta would be a great step forward in securing this and match the progress made over recent seasons by other Academies.”

Town’s plan to invest in the site and create a single-centre training base will be voted on by members of the current Rec Club – Syngenta Sports and Fitness Ltd – on 29 November.

As part of the scheme funded by Town chairman Dean Hoyle, they have been promised improvement in their own facilities for wider community use and acceptance has been unanimously recommended by the Rec Club’s management committee.

Town’s Academy sides, from eight years old up to fifteen, already use Syngenta for matches on Sundays. And Mitchell hopes that the proposals get the go ahead give Town’s youngsters access to Premier League standard facilities.

This would help the Club retain and attract high quality young players.

“We have a lot of high-quality competition in our area from other Academies such as Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool to name but three, and such a high-quality facility would be a big asset for our Club,” added Mitchell.
