Position: Player Wellbeing Executive

Position Type: Full time

Location: The PFA has facilities and offices in Manchester and London but we are flexible in terms of where the ‘home’ office will be – TBC

Salary: Competitive remuneration package plus good benefits

Purpose and Scope

The PFA are currently looking a Player Wellbeing Executive who will assist in the growth of the PFA’s Player Wellbeing department. 

The PFA Wellbeing department provides support services to all football players in the English leagues.  We deliver mental health workshops to all clubs and discreetly assess and support players and members.  We also operate a confidential 24/7 helpline, so that any player in crisis can access immediate support.

We understand the unique issues that can arise for professional footballers and have the experience to help get members back to their best.

Key Responsibilities

  • To work within the Player Wellbeing department providing emotional and mental health support to the union’s members.
  • Arrange and deliver department presentation/workshop at football clubs across all applicable leagues.
  • To liaise with club delegates and other PFA departments in order to promote the work of the union’s Player Wellbeing department and to support any enquiries generated.
  • Attend regular internal meetings contributing ideas and initiatives for department growth.
  • To manage enquiries from members or their families, representatives of clubs and other PFA staff.
  • To offer direct support to members or signpost to pathways of support using the union’s established partners.
  • Case management as described above ensuring appropriate records are maintained.
  • To promote the work of the union’s Player Wellbeing department to members, clubs, outside agencies and the media as directed.
  • To abide by all terms, conditions and policies that apply to a member of staff of the PFA.

Skills and Requirements

Essential:

  • Qualified to a minimum of Level 4 Counselling (Diploma).
  • A high level of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Understanding of Code of Ethics and confidentiality policies.
  • To maintain personal clinical supervision relationship in line with level of client contact.
  • Ability to communicate therapeutic information in written and verbal formats to clients and professionals.
  • An empathy for professional footballers and the problems they experience in their careers and retirement.
  • A passion for football and an understanding of the work of the PFA.
  • An ability to form positive relationships.
  • An ability to speak publicly and deliver presentations to a group.
  • Strong organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Good administration skills.
  • A full UK driving license.

Desirable:

  • A minimum of 6 months in a client facing role offering counselling services.
  • Experience of assessment and triage to appropriate pathways of support.
  • Experience of care planning.
  • An understanding or experience of professional sport at elite level.
  • Language skills.
