Winner – Rio Hayhurst (Carlisle United Club Community Organisation)

Carlisle United’s Rio Hayhurst is the deserved winner of the latest LFE Learner of the Term award having been a standout student in recent months.

Speaking to LFE, mentor Jack Stephenson detailed why this academic year has been so successful for Rio so far.

“I’ve been teaching Rio for over a year now and in this time he’s become the model example of application and channelling his passion, energy, and enthusiasm into his studies and football. He joined the course a few weeks late but immediately caught up on any work he was behind on. Last year, due to personal reasons, Rio had some difficulty in keeping consistent with his attendance for both his studies and football. However, by taking action into his own hands and reaching out to the relevant people for guidance and help, Rio created his own plan of action. He has stuck to this ever since and has reaped the benefits. He’s since got 100% attendance in all areas of his course. From this, he has shown great consistency in achieving distinctions and is now thinking of university as an option after the course, something that wasn’t an option for him when he joined. Away from the classroom, Rio’s change in attitude towards his football training sessions has seen him be promoted from a regular C-Team player to a hard-working, consistent centre-back who regularly puts in great performances.

“Rio must be praised greatly for his turnaround in efforts, determination, resilience, and so much more. He has seen the benefits of overcoming adversity, buckling down on his studies, and applying himself to all aspects of the course which has now enabled Rio to start his own journey of becoming a hard-working, mature young man. I really do congratulate Rio for using his enthusiasm as a tool to grow and flourish. From all of us here at Carlisle, keep this up Rio, we’re so proud of the turn-around, and the growth in confidence, whilst at the same time, remaining the kind and considerate person we know. Well done!”
