Preston North End Apprentices were treated to some worthwhile advice from a Lilywhites legend this week when Sir Tom Finney payed them a visit at North End’s Springfields training ground.
The Lancashire Evening Post (LEP) was there to interview Sir Tom and capture his thoughts on the changes that have occurred in the game over the years. Once dubbed the ‘Preston Plumber’ Sir Tom made 76 appearances and scored 30 goals for England.
He joined Preston North End juniors at 15 and progressed through the ranks. He played against Arsenal at Wembley when he was just 18, but his father insisted he completed his apprenticeship in the family’s plumbing business before signing as a professional.
Two lucky Apprentices, including LFE’s very own blogger Jack Cudworth and first year centre-back Dominic Collins, were also in the limelight when they were filmed for LEP TV. They took advice and inspiration from Sir Tom.
Jack said:
“He gave us some great advice and said that the most important thing was to enjoy the game and if you don’t enjoy it then there’s no point doing it, no matter what the rewards are.”
