Ex ASE graduate, Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Alex Smithies is revelling in his Man-of-the-Match display during Saturday’s 1 – 0 victory over local rivals Leeds.
The 18-year-old stopper produced a string of fine saves to keep Leeds at bay after Nathan Clarke had headed Town in front, ensuring a fine winning double over their Yorkshire rivals.
Smithies told the Club’s official website:
“You could see what it meant to me from my reaction after the game – it is hard to put into words really. I have been looking forward to it all season and I am delighted with how it went.”
Smithies, an England Under-19 international, who has been a regular in the Terriers’ side since the beginning of December, is now attracting the attention of a number of Premier League Clubs but for the time being is determined to keep his feet on the ground.
“My focus at the moment is to stay in the team and keep trying to play well. I have real competition for the place in the team from Matty Glennon and Simon Eastwood who are both fantastic keepers and if I can stay in the team I will be very pleased.”
